The Montpelier Police Department Reserve Unit is comprised of volunteer employees, both certified and non-certified, and any part-time officer staff. The police Reserve Unit supplements and assists full-time staff with their duties, complete ride-alongs, conduct traffic control, and do various community service projects. The Reserve Unit is an independent organization.
The Reserve Unit is an essential service for our agency, especially when certified officers can assist full-time staff with shift duties. Each Reserve Officer is issued a uniform and required to meet a minimum amount of service hours. While volunteer in nature, Reserve Officers are considered police officers, with duties ranging from assisting at scenes, riding with fullt-time staff, parade details, and much more! Reserve Staffing levels are contingent upon need, and the consideration of the board of the Reserve Unit. Application does not guarantee acceptance.

| SEARCH AND RESCUE/4x4 Unit |
In 2021, the Montpelier Police Department Reserve Unit added additional volunteers which comprise the SR4x4, also known as the Search and Rescue/4x4 Unit. These volunteers have varying degrees of law enforcement experience, including retired LEOs. The SR4x4 utilizes off-road equipment and technology, specializing in off-road searches. SR4x4 has been together since 2016, serving another agency prior to coming on board with MPD. The SR4x4, while a part of MPD, is offered to all surrounding agencies who may need this special type of assistance! We are proud to serve!
