| YOUTH PROGRAMS |
The Montpelier Police Department is constantly striving to find new ways to educate our youth. Whether it’s one on one contact or with the many programs organized each year, we hope to give our children the needed information to become law abiding citizens. We are willing to address old and new issues. The Montpelier Police Department is very active with our school system. Members of the police department can be used as "key speakers" in certain educational settings. We offer our assistance to the Montpelier Schools by answering questions, or helping teach classes, such as Legal Issues. We feel our solid commitment and working relationship with our youth and our school system is a large part of our success! Listed below are several programs that are offered by members of MPD.
High School Level (Grades 9-12):
- No Illusions - A yearly program developed by Chief Dan McGee (School Resource Officer) for our children in High School. It addresses the issues of kids moving away from small/rural towns to college towns. With the ever present danger of drug and alcohol use, it's important to let our kids know what information we have and how they can protect themselves. The program is based upon the theory of not living in a glass house and making responsible choices. This program is presented to seniors (grade 12) at Montpelier Schools.
- Prom Promise - A yearly program presented to the High School, just prior to the Prom dance. We hope that we can give kids valuable information that can impact them in making good, solid decisions. This means saying NO to drugs and alcohol. We ask that students sign a Promise Note to make these smart decisions. We are happy to say we’ve had no recently reported incidents at Prom time involving drug or alcohol use.
Middle School Level (Grades 6-8):
- Bullying - A customized program developed by Chief Dan McGee (School Resource Officer) offered to all grade levels, but specifically targeting those age groups most at risk!
- The Montpelier Police Department also offers standard format programs developed by the National Crime Prevention Council and AIMS Multimedia.
Elementary School Level (Grades K-5):
- Bullying - A customized program developed by Chief Dan McGee (School Resource Officer) offered to all grade levels, but specifically targeting those age groups most at risk!
- Personal Property - McGruff helps our police officers with this program, telling kids to respect others property. This program is usually presented to kindergarten and 1st graders.
- Personal Space - McGruff again is a key in helping kids know good touching versus bad touching. The National Crime Prevention Council formatted program is used to help younger kids (primarily 2nd graders) stay safe!
- Disney programs - Our department utilizes several formatted programs, including some of the Disney brand for Internet education. This program targets 3rd to 4th graders.
- Drug/Alcohol Prevention -The Montpelier Police Department also offers customized programming for the 5th graders which include teaching the kids to saty "NO!".
Chief Dan McGee has been certified School Resource Officer since 2002 where he has presented pre-designed and personally developed programs to the youth of Montpelier and beyond! If you would like a presentation at your school just call us at 419-485-3122.
