| ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT |

The Montpelier Police Department has been in operation since the late 1800's, although
the department initially utilized a town marshall. In the mid-1900's the village council voted to change the law enforcement operations to that of a police department. The department has operated in this manner since.

The Montpelier Police provide general and emergency services to all citizens who reside and visit our town. Montpelier is located in the center of Williams County, Ohio, which is located in the very northwest corner of the state. The population fluctuates around 4,500 residents.

Montpelier was known as a railroad town for many decades, but when the railroads changed operation in the late 1970's the town also changed. Today, Montpelier is a diverse industrial and residential community, requiring diverse policing needs.

Today our agency focuses on the policing philosophy known as "community policing". We take pride in the many "small town" services we can provide in conjunction with standard policing services. Our department offers business and residential checks, conducts routine in-service programming for school children, instructs the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Program, and provides the AARP 55 and Alive driving program for seniors. We strive to service the vast needs of the town and keep current on crime trends and equipment. Officers are trained in various areas to ensure our ability to serve the community is well-rounded. Montpelier PD has an on-staff firearms and tactical instructor, driving instructor, subject-control/defensive tactics instructor, and officers with other specialized training.

Our agency uses a standard para-military rank structure including a Chief of Police, Lieutenant, two Sergeants, and various patrol officer positions. The Montpelier Police also employs a volunteer Reserve/Auxiliary Police Unit. The department functions with general patrol operations and the officers often act as "first responders" for medical calls. The department employs regular foot patrols and a bike patrol unit. Officers also give many hours of community service to special events, such as the Cops and Kids program sponsored by the FOP Lodge 181.

On February 23, 2017, the Village of Holiday City, Ohio began contracting with the Montpelier Police Department for police services. Holiday City is approximately 2.6 square miles, mainly of industrial and commercial business. MPD's diverse ability allows the department to provide services to Holiday City in a flexible and professional manner. For more information about Holiday City, please visit their website.
