| AWARDS PROGRAM |
The Montpelier Police Department expects a high level of professional conduct from all its officers. When officers perform their duties in a manner exemplifying the high standards of service, it is fitting to officially commend that performance. The department currently has 17 different ribbon awards. Each award is described in detail below.

||
Medal of Honor
|
||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer for an act of personal bravery and extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty, which involved a risk of life to him or herself.
|
||
Purple Heart
|
||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer who is killed in the line of duty, or while in the performance of duty, sustained injuries, which would constitute serious physical harm as defined by the Ohio Revised Code.
|
||
Distinguished Service | ||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer for any act involving great personal risk while performing his or her duties (this risk may not have been deemed a life or death situation and the officer may not have been injured during the course of this action). | ||
Life Saving Award |
||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer for any action, which is directly responsible for sustaining or saving a human life (any act which removes a person from immediate danger when such danger would or could have taken the person’s life).

Special Commendation Award |
||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer for any action which benefits the department by implementing or improving an administrative or tactical procedure, policy or training; performing above normal requirements and demonstrating a special faithfulness, perseverance, initiative, ability and observation; distinguishing him/her by demonstrating a willingness and ability to set a professional example for peers and a high degree of loyalty and dedication to the department.

Community Service Award |
||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer who distinguishes himself/herself in the community by rendering services, acts of kindness above and beyond that of normal duties (contributing to the success of a community affairs program).

Good Conduct Award | ||
Awarded to any active police officer for honorable service to the community and the Montpelier Police Department (one full year of service without disciplinary action). |
||
Safe Driving Award | ||
Awarded to any active police officer for operating the Village of Montpelier vehicles in a safe manner and has not been involved in a crash which showed fault on the part of the officer (one full year of service without incident). |
||
Perfect Attendance Award | ||
Awarded to any active police officer that completes one calendar year with a perfect attendance record without missing work due to illness or non-work related injury. |
||
Marksman Award | ||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer that meets criteria as defined by the department firearms instructor. |
||
OVI Award | ||
Awarded to any active police officer that, during the course of one year attains a minimum of ten arrests and convictions of individuals who are found to be in violation of Ohio Revised Code 4511.19 pertaining to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. |
||
DUS Award | ||
Awarded to any active police officer that, during the course of one year attains a minimum of ten arrests and convictions of individuals who are found to be in violation of Ohio Revised Code 4510 pertaining to operating a motor vehicle with a suspended drivers license. |
||
Physical Fitness | ||
Awarded to any officer who participates in and passes a physical fitness test as determined by the Chief of Police. Physical fitness exams may vary for each level of award earned, progressively becoming more difficult. Exams may be based off of Cooper Fitness standards, Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy standards, a combination of both, or as prescribed by a knowledgable fitness instructor. | ||
Instructor | ||
Awarded to any active police officer that is OPOTA certified as an instructor. | ||
Field Training Officer | ||
Awarded to any active police officer that is recognized by the Montpelier Police department as a field-training officer for new employees. |
||
Armed Service | ||
Awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer who is currently serving in any reserve component or who has successfully completed one enlistment period in the United States Armed Forces. |

A.L.E.R.T. | ||
A.L.E.R.T. is an acronym for Advanced Law Enforcement Resources and Tactics. Developed in 2014 and implemented starting 2015, the Montpelier Police Department chose a small, select group of officers to become more advanced trained in things like close quarter tactics, tactical entry, and critical incident response. Those persons who are selected and honorably serve as an A.L.E.R.T. Team Member receive this ribbon. |

Certificates | ||
Certificates will be awarded to any active police officer or reserve officer for any act or acts involving exceptional police service. |
